Seeds
The Power of Seeds and Metaphorically how seeds are in everything; they are life
Every spring as the snow thaws and
the weather is basically drunk, farmers, gardeners and households are ready to
search for seeds to furrow into their fields and gardens. Some have purchased their seeds while others
gathered their seeds in the fall to replant in the warm spring weather. The latter seeming to be a joke this year!
Life in general is a seed, it is
often viewed with an everyday eye but when we examine this tiny start and watch
as it fulfills a journey of growth it is quite amazing. Planting the garden every year I am truly
humbled by the power of a seed; a leek seed for example is so small that if a
slight gust of wind comes, it will fly away out of my hand. Yet, when it comes time to harvest the leek
from this tiny seed, it’s beauty, strength and color are a wonder to look
at. Carrot seeds are similar in size to
the leek and in fact they are so small I have mixed them with sand and place
them in a shaker to expel them to their new temporary home.
This is where seeds and humans are
the same, an idea, a thought, can be considered the seed of an amazing change
or catalyst of what is to come next. We
are capable of good, and we are capable of evil, our choice; life is an
opportunity to plant a seed of good in what sometimes can only be described as
a nasty storm of stuff. It probably is
why I like to grow food; I get to view this tiny spec of good grow into a
source of nutritional deliciousness!
Seeds are interesting as they can soar through and drop into
unbelievable places to grow; have you ever witnessed an evergreen growing out
of granite? I have. It’s all about
fungi, the fungi are found on the roots and that fungi breaks down the rock to
offer nutrients to the roots and tree.
Thus, seeds of good are something
we should all consider, even in the craziest places where it does not appear
the seed will have what is necessary to take root. It may look like a gray dreary place filled
with corruption of the worst kind and yet one tiny seed can come in and find
just enough substance to make change of monumental consequences. Life is like that; we say one word or direct
one person towards a journey of positivity we could be planting the very seed
that shifts the universe into a different direction.
Planting a garden often requires us
to consider what plants grow well together or ensuring the distance between the
plants are sufficient to allow room for growth.
This type of planting is a well thought out plan, it shows thinking,
planning, and envisioning what the growth from the seeds will look like. Unlike the seed flying and landing in a
unique area to find itself growing out of a rock, planning the garden can
ensure we have an excellent harvest.
This is also true in life, when we plan and work to plant positive seeds
in life, we are looking to have a bountiful harvest in the fall of life. When we educate, we are planting seeds, when
we instruct how to, we are planting seeds, when we offer paths through tough
and difficult times, we are planting seeds.
The same is true for negative seeds, those seeds we sow could be the
very seeds of destruction if we are not careful.
Perception of good seeds versus bad
seeds is another interesting dichotomy we all have seen dandelions bloom and
blow their seeds all over the front lawn and within weeks the green grass is
filled with yellow dandelion flowers. The
neighborhood association, “you need to clean that lawn up.” Hmm…I cannot eat that grass, but I can eat
the dandelion greens? This is also true
in life, the politician telling us to fear whatever is good for us.
Seeds are a source of good and bad
for some, while seeds for me represent what could be possible, if I water and
feed those seeds. Looking into the weeds
of yesterday only to find nutrient rich foods growing freely in the yard. Seeds of knowledge are feared by some and
relished by most it is a conundrum when the knowledge offered has zero validity
nor has it been vetted, but this seed does not need to be, instead it grows out
of ignorance. Ignorance to life
sustaining possibilities of a plant called a weed.
